MedSol AI Solutions, a healthcare software development company, aims to revolutionise early disease detection in Africa through advanced AI technology integration. The project's primary objective was to transform MedSol's cutting-edge medical AI software into a scalable, accessible mobile-based screening tool that could assist healthcare professionals in delivering accurate, timely medical diagnoses, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Glucode partnered with MedSol AI Solutions to bring this vision to life, leveraging design and development expertise to build a robust and user-friendly artificial intelligence app. This collaboration resulted in an innovative health app that serves as both a symptom checker and a powerful tool for early intervention in breast cancer cases.


The Critical Need for AI-Powered Health Assessment in Africa
Breast cancer remains a leading cause of mortality among women in South Africa, with rural areas facing the highest risks due to limited access to early diagnosis and treatment. MedSol AI Solutions identified a critical need for a mobile-based screening tool to empower healthcare professionals with quick and reliable breast cancer screening technology. However, the challenge extended beyond medical needs; the project also demanded technical integration of advanced AI with accessible and practical mobile health technology, ensuring the solution could be deployed at scale. This innovative approach combines the benefits of telemedicine, smart health monitoring, and AI-assisted medical triage to address the pressing healthcare needs of underserved populations.
Developing a Proof of Concept for AI-Enhanced Medical Imaging
We began by identifying and scoping a Proof of Concept (POC) to validate the feasibility of integrating MedSol's AI technology into a mobile platform. The primary objective of the POC was to test the AI's capability to analyse breast ultrasound images in real-time through a mobile app interface, essentially creating an AI doctor for breast cancer screening.
Through strategic planning and execution, the POC demonstrated successful integration of machine learning algorithms with smartphone sensors, paving the way for full-scale development of this groundbreaking healthcare accessibility app.
From Concept to Minimum Viable Product: A Journey in Digital Health
Building on the POC's success, Glucode transitioned to developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The MVP phase focused on delivering critical functionalities while maintaining the potential for future scalability. Key features included the scanning functionality, a modular architecture that supported updates, and a strong emphasis on accessibility to accommodate diverse healthcare settings.
This phase also explored the potential for expanding the app's capabilities to include a symptom checker online, enabling users to perform preliminary health assessments before seeking professional medical advice.
Designing an Intuitive Interface for Healthcare Professionals
The design phase prioritised familiarity, accessibility, and clear visual hierarchy. We utilised Android Material guidelines to create an intuitive interface, ensuring healthcare professionals could easily navigate the app. The design balanced modern aesthetics with practical usability, incorporating existing assets to maintain brand consistency.
Our first step was to streamline the navigation structure, reducing complexity and ensuring healthcare professionals could access key features quickly. The design leveraged an extensive range of visual assets, including user journey maps, app icons, screens, User Interface (UI) elements, design library components, typography, and colour palettes. Each asset was purposefully used to enhance clarity and create a cohesive and professional interface for this AI-powered health data platform.
Technical Achievements: Integrating AI in Smartphones for Medical Diagnosis
A modular architecture enabled future-proofing the app, allowing seamless updates and feature additions. Key technical achievements included integrating the app with Clarius hardware for real-time breast ultrasound scanning and implementing robust functionalities such as PDF export for diagnostic reports.
The development approach balanced delivering core functionality with enabling future enhancements, such as personalised health recommendations and AI-driven diagnostic support. This forward-thinking approach positions the app as a comprehensive telemedicine platform capable of adapting to evolving healthcare needs.
